2.Reasons and impacts of brain drain within the health care industry.

The following points show the reasons which affect the brain drain within the healthcare industry.

1. Low income

All the employees who are working in the healthcare sector provide enormous service to the patients since they play vital roles with great responsibility for patient’s life.

Since there is high inflation within the  country, employees are unable to do their day to work or their necessities using a given monthly ordinary salary.

There is a high mismatch between the employee’s performance and their payments within the healthcare industry. Most healthcare servants are working both day and night and if a sufficient salary is not given to them, less motivation and job dissatisfaction could be seen among the employees.

2. Fewer opportunities for grow within and career advancement

Qualified doctors and Nurses are looking to build up their stability within the industry.

The basic arguments for having career advancements are to reach to higher pay grade and achieve a more senior position or role within the industry.

They want to continue to develop and grow their skills. They would also like to have opportunities to function in a variety of roles and advance to higher levels within the industry

The benefit of advancement opportunities in a company is a significant contributor to employee retention. A retention strategy is ineffective without the opportunity for career growth.

but currently,  the healthcare industry doesn’t pay much attention to the career advancement of employees. Therefore, as a result, it adversely affects employees’ confidence levels.

If they are not able to grow, develop, and be promoted in their current industry  they will seek employment elsewhere leaving companies with gaps to fill.

3. A stressful work environment

A stressful work environment promotes the loss of motivation which most often results in reduced efficiency and absenteeism and as a result it adversely affects the productivity of the organization. the ultimate result of having a stressful environment is making job dissatisfaction and conflicts among the employees

4. Political Instability

When the different political parties came to power, they amend and do change the existing policies within the industry from time to time. Therefore employees pay for their dissatisfaction by picketing, and rioting due to the sudden changes that occur within the industry. Because of these situations, healthcare sector employees couldn’t serve their patients as well.

The following points show the impact of the brain drain within the healthcare industry.

1. A decrease in the quality of care

A study conducted in the United States statistically demonstrates that an increase in nurses’ workload was associated with a decrease in patient satisfaction, a worsening of outcomes, and an increase in nosocomial infections. In other words, the more a nurse must deal with a large number of patients, the more the quality of care is affected

If nurses have more patients, they can logically spend less time on each one. The consequence of this is that certain important but time-consuming interventions cannot be carried out.

When overworked, nurses and midwives have less time to communicate with their patients and with colleagues. Such communication is however crucial for the overall management of a patient

2. Lack of Professional Opportunities within the industry

Nurses and midwives are a major group of healthcare workers (HCWs) who are essential to health systems considering their frequent contact with patients

This vital role involves great responsibility. They are performing the most interventions on patients in order to save their life, which puts them at higher risk of making a mistake that might have serious consequences.

Most all doctors and nurses are well-qualified and trained employees. But due to the current situation in Srilanka, recently most qualified doctors were migrating to other countries, as a result, patients are facing issues when they couldn’t get professional doctor services for their illnesses. Therefore it adversely affects the quality of people’s life.

3. Loss Of Tax Revenue

Another effect on areas that experience brain drain is the loss of revenue. Governments rely on income taxes to fund their social programs and infrastructure projects. Most Of healthcare employees pay taxes in order to uplift the government economy. When they are leaving the country, government loos their tax portion and it adversely affects income distribution

4. Decline in competitiveness.

A shortage of skilled labor can push up wages faster than productivity. Remittances sent home can also cause appreciation in the exchange rate. Remittances can also lead to lower labor supply as those who receive remittances have less incentive to work for a low hourly wage.

  2. This is very valuable topic in those days.Doctors are a group of exclusive intellectuals in the society. Leaving the country by them cause for
the shortage of experts in the country. Moreover doctors’ migration motivates the migration of
    intellectuals related to other fields.
To generate a healthy workforce it is essential to have a better health service. But when doctors
migrate largely the health sector becomes frail and unable to achieve the economic prospects.

    1. Strategies should be implemented as soon as possible to mitigate this issue. If not, it will negatively affect the quality of care for the people.

  3. Is this due to the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka and the excessive tax policies levied on academics?

    1. Yes Nipuna, economic crisis is not the only reason for this issue. There are less opportunities for career development, less training and development programmes, stressful working environment, no recognition, inequality, and a lower salary. These are some of the reasons that affect this issue

  4. As my opinion, Political influence of a country will be more affected to brain drain of developing countries. As a example I can highlighted situation of present days in Sri Lanka. Unbearable taxation and unfair decision on different sectors are mostly cause to the brain drain.

    1. yes , political instability  mainly affects this issue, but within the health care industry, more reasons are circulated for this issue. If the employee is educated and skilled, they are seeking to climb their career ladder , but if  there are no opportunities for them, they are leaving the place in order to find a better place where they can survive..
